Selling Goods: The Truth, Goodness and Beauty of Trade
Selling things often gets a bad wrap. The love of money is the root of all evil, after all. Yet what if we were to view trade, as an expression of love. What could that look like?
It could look like an honest exchange of goods.
Let’s break down that sentence.
“An” – Singular. Each transaction is one time.
“Honest” – There is no deception or guile. No ulterior motives hidden away. (For example, someone may ‘buy’ something, with the intention of using the exchange to later sue the seller.)
“exchange” – Each party gains something in return. To be an exchange, it must be equivalent values. Often ‘money’ is an intermediary, but barter also matches the definition and is equally good.
“of goods” – this is our bias coming in, but we think things traded should be ‘good’. Ideally trading one lesser good for a better good. If we have 10 loaves of bread, but only need 2, then the excess could be seen as lesser, and the greater goods, say more nutrient dense cheese, would be the proper exchange.
